Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about safety certificates in Queensland — in plain English.

General

The basics of Queensland safety certificate requirements.

A safety certificate (also called a roadworthy or certificate of inspection) is an official QLD government document issued by a licensed AIS confirming a vehicle meets minimum safety standards. The official form is Form 35 — Certificate of Inspection.
You need a safety certificate when:
  • Selling a registered vehicle in Queensland
  • Re-registering a vehicle that's been de-registered
  • Transferring registration in certain situations
2 months or 2,000km from the date of issue — whichever comes first. Time your inspection accordingly if you're selling.
In Queensland, "roadworthy" and "safety certificate" are the same thing. The official term is safety certificate (or certificate of inspection). Other states use different terminology.
Brakes, steering, suspension, tyres & wheels, lights, body & chassis, windows, mirrors, seatbelts and more — all against the QLD DoT checklist for your vehicle type.
